Since Mac users have migrated several years ago to Apple's newer operating system called OS X, there have been many cases of errors in Final Cut reading and writing files when the logged in "user" doesn't have sufficient privileges.

By default, when you start your computer for the first time, you create a single user, and this user has "Admin" or administer privileges. When additional users are created on the computer, they should be created with Admin access. When the user is not the Admin, they may have problems accessing, reading and writing various, necessary files. To see if your user is an Admin:

1. Go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > click on the Accounts button.

Listed along the left side of the window are all installed users and whether or not they are an Admin.

Creating a new, fresh user is sometimes a great troubleshooting technique to find out if there may be problems with the current user settings and privileges. But at first, just be sure the user has Admin privileges.
