If a drive won't let you render, capture from tape, display thumbnail images and audio waveforms, it may be that your media drive has ownership "issues". This can be remedied by turning off ownership on the drive (in most cases). By the way, the most likely reason why a media drive may not have enough privileges is that more than one user has been created for the computer.

1. From the Finder (Desktop), select the media hard drive with problems.

2. Press Command/I to bring up the Get Info window for the drive.

3. For OS X version 10.4 (Tiger), at the bottom of the Get Info window is a checkmark for "Ignore ownership on this volume". Check this box. You may be prompted for a password.

If you are using the latest version of OS X, version 10.5 (Leopard), then the window will look a bit different. You will first have to un-lock the options with the little lock button, as shown next, then you can choose "Ignore ownership on this volume".
